What to Know Before Visiting Bangkok: Local Tips for First-Time Travellers

Planning a trip to Bangkok for fertility care? Knowing a few local tips can make your stay smoother and more enjoyable.

The BTS (Skytrain) and MRT (underground) are the easiest ways to get around the city –fast, safe, and air-conditioned. Buy a BTS Rabbit Card or MRT Card to make travel simpler.

In Thailand, if you are female, you end your sentences with the polite ‘ka’. If you are male, you will end your phrases with ‘krap’.

Helpful Thai phrases:

  • Hello – Sawasdee ka/krap
  • Thank you – Khop khun ka/krap
  • No spicy – Mai phet ka/krap
  • How much? – Tao rai ka?/krap?
  • Yes/No – Chai ka/krap / Mai chai ka/krap
  • Where is the toilet? – Hong nam, yuu tii nai ka?/krap?

Bangkok is generally safe and welcoming, but always carry bottled water, wear sunscreen, and dress respectfully when visiting temples. Keep a digital copy of your passport and know your hotel location in Thai script to show a taxi driver if needed.

Some local customs are important to be aware of. Do not touch anyone’s head, including children – it is considered the most sacred part of the body in Thai culture.

Avoid pointing with your feet, which is seen as disrespectful, and always remove shoes before entering someone’s home or a temple.

Public displays of anger or confrontation are frowned upon, so a calm, polite approach is always best.

Most people speak some English in tourist areas, but learning a few words goes a long way. The locals appreciate your effort, and a smile truly opens doors in Thailand! Welcome!
